Nutrition Through the Lifecycle
NCP-ADIME Skills Development
Reflection
The Nutrition Care Process (NCP) is completed daily in a clinical setting. Luckily, I was completing my clinical rotation at the same time I was enrolled in this class, Nutrition Through the Lifecycle. My clinical rotation put together all of the NCP case studies that I have learned in the MSND program. I was well prepared for my clinical rotation thanks to our NCP case studies, and it was a lot of fun to put together what I learned from my case studies and clinical experience to complete this assignment! It's important to note that PES statements will vary greatly from dietitian to dietitian, and that's okay!
Food & Cultural Competency in the Lifecycle
Reflection
I chose to report on Mexico for this assignment. I can say, with first hand experience, that it is absolutely essential for an RDN to have training in food and cultural competency. The United States is home to a vast array of individuals from different cultures and who practice a variety of different dietary practices and beliefs. An RDN *must be trained* in cultural competency and must be taught how to familiarize themselves with different cultures, especially if these cultures are predominant in the area in which the RDN works. For example, I grew up in Arizona and individuals who follow Mexican food traditions and hold on to many Mexican beliefs reside there. If I was a practicing RDN in Arizona, I would ensure I understood the Mexican culture, food beliefs, traditions, etc so I could best serve that patient population. Now, I fully understand Mexican culture, food beliefs and traditions, but if I didn't I would ensure I did. I personally know individuals who have had very negative experiences with RDNs who are not culturally competent. I am happy to say that completing the MSND program at King's College has prepared me to be a very culturally competent RDN.
Adolescent Nutrition & Health
Reflection
Probably one of my favorite things about Nutrition and the Lifecycle class is learning about adolescent nutrition and health. I am passionate about ensuring growing children and adolescents receive nutrition education and proper nutrition to give them the best chance possible to enter adulthood with a strong nutritional foundation. I had the privilege to complete my Food Service Management (FSM) rotation with Nassau County Schools and took great joy in seeing children of all ages and backgrounds being served the healthiest school lunches possible. Seeing bright shining smiles from elementary to high school kids enjoy the nourishment received from the school warmed my heart. Children who suffer from food insecurity and poor nutrition are impacted into adulthood. It is my goal to ensure I do my part to reduce childhood hunger so they have the best shot possible at a healthy adulthood.
